The Sanctuary of Light, Germiston, held its first service in a Basement in Rutland Place in Human Street, Germiston on Sunday, the 2nd of October 1992. Fred and Sandra Labuschagne, its founding members, had previously been involved in the running of a Spiritualist church in Benoni, and after a number of years had seen the need for a church in the Germiston area.
Many years before, a group of people had held services in a house in Lambert Street and then in Melody Centre in Meyer Street, but due to the passing of its founding member, Peter Bekker, the church had eventually closed, leaving a gap which through time was realized by Fred and Sandra.
After many months of searching, they eventually found the premises in the basement of Rutland Place and took the plunge to open the Sanctuary of Light. At the time, these premises were shared with the Trade Unions, who proved to be unhelpful and rowdy and, after a car had been stolen during a service on a Sunday, it was agreed that it was time to look out for something more permanent. Our congregation had grown to +- 50 per Sunday, so finding the RIGHT premises proved to be a little more difficult than we had hoped.
We became aware of a house, just opposite the then Germiston Hospital, in 6 Angus Street, which had up until a short while before, been used as a Portuguese church. Walls had been broken down to accommodate their congregation and it seemed like the perfect solution to our problems.
Speaking to the owners, it was agreed that we would have the option to buy at a later stage, so we signed the agreement and moved in in 1994. At first the space was perfect, but as the weeks went by, we had to put people in the entrance, passage, kitchen and down the aisle. (Once you were seated, that’s where you stayed until the end of the service as there was no space to move.
We even hired a marquee at one stage to accommodate all the people.
So, once again, we started looking for new premises. We had approached the owners where we currently held services, but it turned out that someone had defrauded the church and put the premises on an individual’s name, and this individual could not be found.
Our search took us to an open piece of ground, cor. Webber Road, which everyone agreed could be just what we were looking for. The congregation was asked to come up with plans for a new church which we would start building once we had all agreed on the design.
Some of the ideas were beautiful, with a lot of thought behind it, everyone was getting so excited about it! (In hindsight, and looking at the premises now, it is clear that that too would not be suitable as parking would prove to be a big problem later on.
However, as is always the case, Spirit came to our rescue, and we were approached by a builder to purchase this property at more than double what we had paid for it, and after discussing this with the congregation we had all agreed that it was an offer we just could not refuse.
One of our members husbands was in the property business and her husband had mentioned that there was a property a little higher up that would be suitable, but that the owners of the property had absconded, and he was not sure what the position was with the bankers who had been owed a lot of money.
He also mentioned that the property had previously been used as a night club but had closed after the neighbours had petitioned against the noise and the element that was being drawn to the club.
On inspection, other than the terrible smell of “weed” in the toilets, it was perfect. There was ample parking, the “dance” area, inclusive of a sprung wooden floor was surrounded by beautiful arches. The area where the disc jockey sat was also behind a big arch as well as the entrance into this area. The “entertainment” or “refreshment” area (I was never sure what they had used it for), consisted of a bar area, two levels of open space, an office, entrance, back kitchen, and a cooler room.
It certainly had potential. Our only problem now was to approach the bank. Again, Spirit stepped in to help us. The Bankers were only too pleased to have someone move in and look after the premises, rather than let it be destroyed by vandals, and agreed that we could use the premises until they had found the owners, after which we could negotiate to buy the property.
We had the use of these premises for two years, rent free, until we finally were able to put the property into our name. During the two years that we were using the premises, it became clear that should we buy the property, as lovely as it was having the arches, they created blind spots for the congregation who were sitting on the outside of the “dance floor”.
Spirit, through medium “Serio” had suggested that we break down the arches at the side so that the congregation could spread out more (and we could also accommodate more people). So, other than one or two people, all agreed, and the lovely arches were broken down. Our space had increased, and we could now seat between 120 and 140 people.
We had two organs donated to us, Members of the previous Spiritualist church in Knox Street, donated their beautiful wooden podium to us, which we have dedicated to Peter Bekker’s memory, and everything was falling in place.
Our membership was growing weekly; we started a Sunday school, which though small, continues today. Sadly though, it is not used as much as we would like it to be.
A choir was started, which would go out and sing for old age homes on a regular basis. Circles were started and continue today. A healing room was donated, and the previous bar area was converted, and a mother’s room was installed in a room just off the main church area, though we find Mom’s would rather be in the middle of things rather than behind a glass window (even with a loudspeaker in the room).
Probably because the demonstrator does not see them, and they feel excluded from getting messages. We installed a kitchen in the entertainment area which is now used as the “tea” area and where we have our spring lunches etc.
Changes are always being made here and there as the need arises. Four years ago, our roof collapsed, due to substandard materials being used. The damage was considerable, and we were once again looking at finding R180 000 to replace the roof and equipment that had been damaged.
We were forced to find temporary premises to continue our services and reluctantly used a wedding venue chapel for this purpose. It was not the ideal situation as it was cold and draughty, and very dirty some Sundays after they had held a service on the day before, but this pushed us to get a move on with the roof and structures. Six weeks later the venue had a fire, and we were forced to move into the church, which was almost ready, except for the seating, which was now quite depleted due to damage, but we would cope!
As we had to replace seating, we decided to replace the sprung wooden floor with a cement floor, all carpeting had to be replaced, as well as some equipment. One organ had been damaged, as well as the Piano that had been donated, so plans were made for a “make over”.
Windows were added to the outside walls which brought lighter into the church, tiling replaced the cement, theatre chairs replaced the old wooden ones, lighting was changed. Stained Glass windows were placed in Arches at the front of the church, as well as the back, and we were back on track.
Thankfully our congregation has been there throughout the ups and downs, and we are very lucky to boast a loving, friendly family. We thrive on lots of music in our services, having created a more up to date Hymnal than the old dowdy one. We also have a request period a few minutes before the service for people to sing their favourite hymns.
We do not have Committees, but a board of trustees and include our congregation in all big projects.
There will always be something better that we can do, but we try to keep up a good standard of Speakers and Mediums, and constantly look to bettering the service for all concerned.

Spiritualism is not a Religion. It is a spiritual encounter intelligent men and women have with their soul. It is the awakening of man’s consciousness when the truth can no longer be denied, and he accepts that he is merely a pawn in the great creator’s cosmic plan.
When one’s earth consciousness intersperses with one’s soul, spirituality is born. A state which surpasses all religion and Christian dogmas, creeds, superstition, and rituals.
Properly understood and practiced, it is the only philosophy that can bring together all the races and religious factions of the world to create a great force for good in the cosmos and a new dawn for humanity.
When God created the universe and subsequently man, it was clearly never his intention to create different religious factions to compete and resort to war, mayhem, and murder to obtain superiority over each other. This is an abomination created by man due to his inability to accept that we were created to be one spiritual family.
When materialism is removed from religion, man will awaken to the fact that there is only one Supreme being and we are only spirit inhabiting a physical body for our journey on earth.
Man, and women were created as opposites to complement each other. The miracle of the planting and fertilizing of male and female seed provides the miracle of another life.
An entity with all the faculties to live and grow on their earth journey.
What we cannot create is the soul, the spirit, the actual life in that baby.
That is placed into the unborn while being carried in its mother’s womb by a Supreme creator. It is indestructible, and beyond the ability of man.
When we die, and our last breath leaves our body, our spirit is released and transcends from this earthly physical plane to its ultimate destination. The spiritual realm of reality. Man does not Die!
Only the vehicle that carried the real you, the spirit, reaches the end of the road and is either cremated or interred on earth.
The biggest lie ever perpetuated by orthodox religion is that Satan is waiting to devour sinners in a hellfire cauldron.
How can you burn a soul or spirit?
A ploy to make you feel guilty for having been alive. A ploy to frighten the masses and instil a preconception of motivation by fear in gullible minds.
That everyone transgresses in some way or other is a fact of life.
That there is reward or retribution in the afterlife for good or evil done on earth is non-negotiable! But this punishment or reward is not consistent with orthodox teachings and ramblings.
Orthodox religion has created a system of punishment and reward based on creeds, dogmas and doctrines and each one has laid claim to exclusivity on providing passports to this place called heaven.
The only persons who are competent to expand on life in the beyond, are those who have made the transition. Theologians can only speculate and theorize.
Dwellers in the afterlife assure us that their earthly religious views, have no bearing on their spiritual status in the afterlife. “The mighty King and beggar are only different in name”!
Whether you accept the Nicene Creed, The Thirty-Nine principles of faith, are Christian, Jew, Buddhist, or any other religious faction, it matters not. None of these have any relevance to the things that matter.
There is only one acid test regarding your spiritual status when you die!
The way you lived your daily life. Your every thought, word, and deed are indelibly registered on your spirit body.
We take with us the character we moulded in our daily lives. We cannot cheat, lie or pretend. We cannot escape the consequences of our actions by uttering some magic formula on our deathbed and believe all our misdeeds are expunged. Until we take responsibility for our actions, there cannot be spiritual progress.
The saint and the sinner are not on level terms at the time of death. Believing this not to be true is making a mockery of divine justice!
Forgiveness does not release us from personal responsibility.
The true Spiritualist is always conscious of an urge from the other side of life which stresses that real religion consists of the way one’s daily life is led. You may call this morality and not religion. Religion cannot be divorced from ethics.
Spiritualism enables you to realize that in all ages, prophets and seers have been inspired by revelations emanating from the spirit world. But these revelations were suited to the age in which they came.
It is not necessary, in religion, to live in the past. Spiritualism proves that the fountain of inspiration still flows into the world, whenever it can find the necessary channels.
Spiritualism is not a religion. It is more than that! It is Religion itself. Without Spiritualism, religion is meaningless. Almost every religion was founded around a medium, in whose presence psychic phenomena, wrongly called “miracles”, occurred and who could be inspired from the same sources that are still at work.
Here, in Spiritualism, is the nucleus of a brotherhood of man and a religious United Nations that would give religion its rightful place in the world, enabling it to become a force to inspire humanity in its highest ideals.
How foolish does the thought of a “holy war” become viewed with this new knowledge? You can look with pity on the frequent wrangling of theologians and the bickering over scriptural interpretations, realizing these are trivial. Whether you accept them or not makes no real difference to life here or hereafter.
Spiritualism is practiced unencumbered by ancient beliefs, fears, creeds, dogmas, or doctrines, but try to base their conduct on Seven Principles: viz: –
1, The Fatherhood of God
- The brotherhood of man
- The communion of spirits and ministry of angels
- The continuous existence of the human soul
- Personal Responsibility
- Compensation and retribution hereafter for all good and evil deeds done on earth
- Eternal progress open to every human soul.
OR put differently.
The right and duty of every man to think for himself in the matters of Religion.
The absolute Unity of GOD
The Natural humanity of JESUS
The Fatherhood of GOD to all mankind, irrespective of race, creed, or moral differences.
The Hope of an everlasting life of ever-increasing goodness for every human soul.
The Paramount duty of Brotherly love, and of practicing all virtue influenced by fear of punishment or hope of reward here or hereafter.
The Supreme Authority of man’s reason and conscience.
The Progressive Character of our knowledge of GOD, as of all out other knowledge.
There is no death! It is man to think, to wonder and to ponder over the mystery of his existence here and hereafter. Once the fact of communication between those who once lived on earth and us is accepted, much that was relegated to the region of faith emerges into the clear light of knowledge.
Knowledge and understanding of the mysteries of life and death, based on sound evidence, make men and women free from fear – especially the fear of death. Fear and ignorance are the enemies of mankind.
That life is imperishable is the fundamental message which Spiritualism proclaims. “There is no death: Survival is a law of nature which operates in the case of every person who dies. Death is as natural as birth and is unaffected by religious doctrines.
Man progresses on life’s journey and evolves from a physical existence to a realm of spirituality.
This life of mortal breath is but a suburb of the life elysian whose portal we call death.
These principles very aptly sum up the religion of Spiritualism. Sincere religious people could not quarrel with any of them. They would be mostly accepted by most modern minds in the Church.
Spiritualists recognize that every individual must work out his spiritual salvation and that, in the end, man must stand on his own feet. They know that we cannot transfer the burden of our responsibilities to somebody else’s shoulders. We get out of life just what we put into it – no more and no less.
